Warriors of the Sea

On December 9^th it will be the 125^th anniversary of the Mexico tragedy, when 27 RNLI volunteers from Southport and St Annes lost their lives trying to save the crew of the ship as it floundered off Formby sands.

The St Annes lifeboat – the Laura Jane- launched sometime after 9pm that night as did the Charles Biggs – the Lytham boat.

The official report at the time recorded a force 7 gale and “….the tide setting against the wind caused the sea to break heavily, rendering it extremely dangerous to boats."

The Charles Biggs managed to rescue the crew of the Mexico, the Laura Jane unfortunately never returned. The fate of the Southport boat the Eliza Fearnley was also cruel with only two of her crew surviving, the rest perished in the sea that night.

To this day it remains the worst RNLI disaster.

On the Fylde coast, our RNLI service has a proud tradition and history – they are part of the very fabric of the town, the crews are our neighbours and friends and because of their bravery and professionalism, sometimes people forget that they are all volunteers.

With the opening of the cockle beds in September, we are reminded just what a brilliant job they do and how selflessly they set out to sea to save those in distress.

You may have seen me and Katie Fieldhouse on the front of the Lytham St Annes Express this week as we are committed to helping to raise funds for the RNLI and I hope that you can help us with this task.

I asked for some help and ideas on my Facebook page a couple of weeks and was overwhelmed by the response from people wanting to help and offering support – thank you so much for your pledges and promises and I’d also like to thank Steve Singleton and the Lytham St Annes Express for their unstinting and generous support

A poem was written at the time of the Mexico tragedy and lest we forget why we are so indebted to our service I thought I’d include the last verse

Think of the sailors round our coasts who, braving sleet and snow,
Leave sweethearts, wives and little ones when duty bids them go.
Think of our sea-girt Island, a harbour where alone
No Englishman to save a life has failed to risk his own
Then when the storm howls loudest, pray of your charity
That God will bless the lifeboat, and the Warriors of the Sea.

Communication is a two way street

George Bernard Shaw once said, “The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place”.

Now there was a chap who knew something about communicating with and engaging his audiences. It’s a favourite quote of mine as it encapsulates completely the mistake we all make from time to time; “hey, I told you to do this task” …. “I told you what I wanted”, “I emailed you”, “I texted you”, “I messaged you – its been communicated, I’ve done my bit”.

Of course that’s not communication – at least its not good communication.

The KEQMS/Arnold debate, rightly has taken up a lot of column inches in local papers, periodicals, and radio time and has caused hundreds of hard pressed parents and their sons and daughters (mine included) at both schools much concern and anxiety.

Without getting into the issues and possible solutions, which I accept are complex and challenging for most of us to fully comprehend and grasp, it strikes me that first and foremost the proposal was always going to be difficult to progress, without a carefully thought through communication plan.

Any reasonable person would accept, that due to a very economic gloomy climate, that both schools inevitably might struggle to maintain reasonable numbers of pupils and revenues at this time.

It is a shame that apparently for legal reasons, the schools could not have engaged parents at an earlier stage. Imagine a dialogue between those parents (some of the brightest business minds on the Fylde Coast) and how everyone could have been galvanised and looking for opportunities to secure a prosperous future with an agreed and considered plan, a call to action, a rallying cry – the response would have been overwhelming.

Instead we have mistrust in some quarters, acrimony, resignations and frankly a bit of a PR bump, battle lines drawn and worst of all, at the moment, just more uncertainty for the kids.

All is not lost – far from it.

As I’m reviewing our own communication strategy at the moment, here at Rowleys, it’s a timely reminder that we all get our communication and messaging wrong from time to time – there is no shame in that – we all make errors of judgement, we’re human. Hopefully lines are now being drawn in the KEQMS/Arnold debate and progress will be made really quickly, but dialogue, discussion understanding and agreement is the only way to ensure real communication has taken place.

The Wedding Of Felicity Wilkinson & Garreth Aspinall at Lytham Hall

Although it was not the usual Lytham Hall Sunny Weather, spirits were certainly not dampened as guests arrived for the wedding of Felicity and Garreth

The Team at Creative Coverhire had done a fantastic job dressing the chairs in the Gold Room

We always say it but this has to be the finest room on the Fylde Coast to hold your Civil Ceremony

Below the proud Mother of the Bride, the fabulous Sally Wilkinson looked fantastic and could finally calm down after doing a sterling job organizing all the pre planning for this special day

It was nearly time for 'I Do' as Garreth and Felicity gave the Marital Vows infront of Friends and Family

The Table plan which had been designed by Flutterby Couture matched the elegance of all the other little details

Rowley's were on hand to look after the pre breakfast Drinks and Canapes which consisted of Tattinger Champagne

Chicken Liver and Brandy Pate in a Filo Crown with Red Currant Syrup

At night the celebrations started in the courtyard that had been covered with its own special star lit marquee.

The evening food was a Cheese cake hand picked by Garreth, including a super strong Snowdonia Black Bomber, Cropwell Bishop Stilton and Y Fenni, a welsh Cheddar cheese with Ale and Whole Grain Mustard, Served with Phil's the Bakery Breads, Grapes, Celery and Cheese Biscuits. Followed by the very tasty Wedding Cake

Flower Design had dressed the tables with lanterns and candle lit bird cages

The rest of the evening was handed over to the legendary Ian Hooper and The Hooper Band who kept everyone rocking even through the brief tropical storm that appeared to develop outside !!!!

Wedding of Dan and Julia Yates

An amazing day was had by all at Dan and Julias vintage wedding at Julias parents farm in WoodPlumpton

The Mahoods Marquee looked stunning with three seperate areas which were a reception area with a raised terrace, a restaurant area and a "Hidden" Night club!

Julias personal creative touches were everywhere from Chocolate Quails eggs favours for the boys.

To homemade jam favours for the girls.

Also everyone had their own heart shape name plaque.

The flowers were by the irrepressible legend who is Mrs Margaret Mason

And not to mention Sam Clayton who was looking after the Photography for the whole day

The Tables looked great with Rowleys own Collection of fine bone china

Best men Nick Yates and Dan Mullen practicing their speeches while nibbling on Rowleys Canapes.

Quails eggs were a theme throughout with a tasting spoon of Crispy Bacon, Asparagus, Hollandaise and of course the fresh Quails eggs.

This specific canape was created by Rowleys especially for the special day.

Everyone was having a fabulous time in the sunny weather whilst being entertained by the fabulous Charlese

The guests were very well turned out and the champagne was flowing!

Well none of us held out high hopes for good weather this weekend, however we were surprised once again by Lytham Hall's Micro Climate when the sun began to shine and the rain stopped

The New Mrs Catherine Openshaw arrives in style in a stunning Rolls Royce

Of course the Champagne was available from word go !

The Legendary Jonny Draper was on hand to snap all the best bits of the day

My Favorite Florist, the Supreme Jane Thompson of Flower Design Events made the Gold Room look stunning.

It was certainly Pimms O Clock once the Sun Came out along with Ice Cold Lansen Champagne

The Beautiful Gold Room, the setting for the wedding breakfast was decorated with Rowley's bone china, along with Catherine's special little touches.

The Flags were out once again for this years Annual Lytham St Annes, St Georges Day Festival

as 300 guests packed the stunning Marquee by Ck Marquees of Kirkham for the

Friday Charity Luncheon

Zime Design of Lytham provided table flowers

The Hog had been roasting away all morning, the crackling was crispy and the aromas, covered the marquee... everyone's mouth's were watering

Whilst the Pimms reception was in full flow, Paul and the team were making the finishing touches to the food... Whilst squeezing in a photo for the Gazette aswell !!

After the meal the day was handed over the Ian Hooper and the Hooper Band who had the crowd rocking till the late afternoon.

On Saturday

Another 300 guests were welcomed by Marching Bands and a Cava Reception

Rowley's were on hand to make sure guests were watered and treated to some scrumptious Canapés

Paul Judges At Lancashire Young Chef of the Year

A Fantastic event to show of Lancashire's up and coming talent last week as Paul Rowley joined fellow Chef's Paul Moss, and Nigel Smith on the Judging Panel of The Lancashire Young Chef of the Year Awards 2011

Students from all over Lancashire gathered to cook a selection of dishes that they thought

could bag them the Title

The bench mark was high and even the judges were over whelmed by what the gifted individuals had laid on before them

Port of Lancaster smoked salmon with Lytham shrimp risotto,Mace cloud, curry oil & baby chard.

A modern twist on Kedgeree

The event was held over two days and by the end the finalists were announced and the winner picked up the coveted prize of Young Chef of the Year 2011

Literary Lunches Come To The Lindum Hotel

After the Success at Hoghton Tower with Sarah Brown, we were ready for our next event only 24 hours after at our home The Lindum Hotel

This time 70 guests descended on the hotel to see and have a chat to their favorite author Joanna Trollope

Everyone enjoyed the wonderful freshly made Sandwiches and Dainty Patisserie laid before them whilst Joanna moved round the crowds to personalise their copy of her new book

Paul Rowley was hard at work in the back ground making sure all the food was top notch, still managing to find time however to come out to have a chat with the guests and Joanna Herself

Once again Elaine Silverwood of Silverdell Books of Kirkham had done a fantastic job pulling the entire event together and was their throughout to make sure everything ran smoothly

A Very Special Literary Lunch Event at Hoghton Tower

It was a rainy day at Hoghton Tower but it did not dampen the spirits of the 60 guests that had come to see the lady of the afternoon Mrs Sarah Brown

The event that was Hosted by Silverdell Books of Kirkham was one of only three book signings that Sarah was doing this year. And she could not have got a more grand venue than Hoghton Tower.

The Great Hall looked fantastic. The ever so brilliant Melissa, event manager at Hoghton had been busy all morning lighting fires and making sure everyone kept the doors shut to keep the place warm. The tables were laid with Rowley's individual sets of Bone China Crockery and every guest got there own signed copy of Sarah's book, Behind the back door.

Paul was on hand to give the finishing touches to the table and the yummy treats that lay ahead

Meanwhile, The Supremo Mr Howard Wing was on hand to entertain the guest with his very own unique blend of Swing Music

Very shortly after, guests were called through to The Dining Room where Elaine Silverwood ran through the afternoon's proceedings and welcomed Sarah Brown

Sarah had the crowd gripped as she gave an insight into life at number 10... Not revealing too many secrets however !

Afterwards everybody was given plenty of time to get their questions answered by Sarah, before afternoon tea was served

Giving Sarah plenty of time to go round for a informal chat and to sign all of her books

The Afternoon was brought to close with a few numbers from Howard Wing's new up coming album

And for those who thought we had forgot about Gordon, well you were wrong. Some of his favourite Cereal Rice Krispie Cakes from Rowley's and a copy of Howards Album.

First Snowdrops begin to appear at Lytham Hall

Lytham Hall has had its Winter Hibernation and its now time to spring back into life for 2011 and celebrate the first Snowdrops.

The Popular Lytham Hall Snowdrop Sunday Walks are every Sunday in February and see thousands of people through the gates. A fantastic opportunity for people to see the beautiful building and chance to show that the venue is a popular tourist attraction

Staining Lodge Golf Club was the Venue for what was to be a Winter Wonderland Extravaganza on 31st December 2010

The Bride and Groom were greeted by Paul Rowley with Laura's very own Champagne Cocktail

The Chef's were hard at work in the Kitchen's preparing a Feast whilst the guests relaxed in the Lodge

The Legendary Phil's Bakery of Lytham once again made an appearance on the menu this time with some of his fantastic Artizan Bread selection

I love this as a Main Course, as it really spurs interactivity amongst the guests at the table

A Sirloin of Beef brought out on it's own chopping board with carving knife and fork to the Lucky nominated Carver, Served with Rustic Roasted Root Vegetables, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Yorkshire Pudding and Rich Roast Gravy

For Dessert was Individual Fondue Platters

Selected Fresh Fruit, Miniature Marshmallows and Hand Made Doughnuts

Okay so now the Wedding Season is starting to calm down a bit,

Our chefs have been working on some new ideas for the Autumn and Winter Season

These are some wholesome, fuss free dishes that you can throw together in minutes and taste great.

Above we have Pan Fried Fillet of Sea Bass, Served on a Bed of Rustic Sautéed Potatoes, Vegetables and Tomatoes

Topped with a Sun Blushed Tomato & Pesto Butter

This Dish Is So Simple, Cut up Some Dice Sized Chunks of Potato, Carrot, & Parsnips.

Boil for 5 mins just to allow to soften. Allow to Cool Slightly before frying in hot oil with some finely chopped onion, garlic and a good squeeze of Lemon

Pan Fry the Sea Bass for no more than 4 Minutes allowing skin to get crispy.

For the Butter, you need to soften a pack of butter and basically mash in some chopped sun blushed tomatoes, pesto and seasoning

Serve in whatever fine dining style you wish, or even better layer it all on a platter with some big wedges of lemon and let everyone tuck in

And for the Vegetarians Among Us

Why not try our Char Grilled Vegetable and Mozzarella Stack

This is Served with a Chunky Tomato Provencale, Balsamic & Red Onion Glaze and Fresh Basil

If you have not got a Griddle Pan do not worry, Just lightly Brush some thick cuts of Aubergine, Courgettes and Yellow Peppers with Olive Oil and Place on a Hot Normal Frying Pan. Layer with Buffalo Mozzarella and Bake in the Oven for 15 Mins.

If you have any available, Place a wooden skewer through the centre just to keep it upright whilst cooking

A rainy weekend, but spirits were high at Lytham Hall as Al and Louises guests arrived on mass by double decker bus at Lytham Hall

Team Rowley's were there to escort everyone out of the rain into the old hall for Champagne and Canape reception

Blackpool fans perhaps. Tangerine was certainly the theme, and the colours complimented the beautiful Lytham Hall Gold Room which was the setting for the wedding breakfast

Al and Louise had gone for our guest carvery option and a number of guests were more than happy to dress up and get the Roast Lamb Carved

After the meal everyone was entertained by The Love Rats Party Band who had everyone rocking till the early house

Rain was forecast but it held off and the Sun was shining over Lytham Hall on Saturday

as Sophie and Stuart celebrated there wedding day.

Rowley's were on hand to cater the St Georges Black Tie Ball. The 2nd part of the St Georges Weekend festival.

This time 400 people descended on Lytham for an evening of entertainment and great hospitality
And wow they were in for a great evening

The massive Marquee from Ck of Kirkham
was once again dressed to its best. Coronet hire had gone to town with some very Chic crockery fitting for the event. Whilst more flowers were brought in for the extra tables from Zime Design.

In the backgrounds Team Rowley's were working hard to get the 400 Smoked Salmon starters prepared ready for service

Cuffe & Taylor Event Management were once again on hand to look after the stunning state of the art sound and lighting system.

The Hooper Band were on site early to warm up and get all the sound checks sorted

The North Wests Finest Swing Singer Howard Wing was first on stage, for the Champagne and Canape reception and Meal

Inside Team Rowley's front of house were looking as fantastic as ever and getting in a last minute photo shoot before everybody sat down

To Start was a Mouthwatering Smoked Salmon Starter with Cream Cheese and Garden Herb Pate, Served with Balsamic Syrup and Phils Bakery Walnut Bread

This was followed by Roast Sirloin of Beef with all the trimmings

For dessert a fantastic Blackcurrant and Raspberry Torte with Fresh Berrys and Woodland Berry Coulis

To finish, Platters of Cheese and Biscuits, Freshly Brewed Coffee with Chocolates and Pieces of Roly's Of Lytham Fudge - You need to check the Vanilla Flavour its addictive !

St Georges Day Festival Friday 23rd April

Friday 23rd April saw the start of the Lytham St Georges Day Celebration
This year set of the picturesque Lytham Green Seafront.

Hundreds of people lined the streets of Lytham for The St Georges Day Parade, before 250 people arrived at the colossal marque on the sea front for a charity afternoon celebrations

The Marquee from Ck Marquee's of Kirkham was to its usual high standards, this year backed up with stunning floral centre pieces from Zime Design of Lytham. Coronet Hire provided high quality Crockery and Cutlery, and hats off especially to Cuffe and Taylor Event Management who kitted out the Marquee with a state of the art sound and lighting system, free of charge.

Rowley's were on hand to greet guests with bubbly and some mouth watering Canape's, all which were St Georges themed and locally sourced.

The Buffet Style Meal began with
Chicken Liver and Brandy Pate Filo Basket
Served with a Cherry Tomato Salad, Balsamic Syrup and Local Artizan Breads From Phil's Bakery

This was followed by Lancashire Tasty Soup

The Main Course was a Choice of Honey Roast Ham or Sirloin of Beef
Served with a Choice of Boiled New Potatoes, Celeriac Coleslaw, Oven Roasted Vegetable Pasta Salad and Continental Mixed Leaves

It was a full house for the Valentines afternoon tea at Lytham Hall last week.

Howard Wing was on hand to entertain the crowds with his own blend of swing music.

Rowley's had gone to town as usual providing some interesting and unique treats for the 48 guests to indulge.

Jane from Flower Design brought some unusual flowers to make some fantastic floral display, all of which were available to win at the end of the event.

Rowley's Afternoon Tea's & Flower Demonstrations 2010

After the success of our 2009 events, The triumphant trio of Rowley's Catering, Flower Design and Lytham Hall have decided to put add some more Afternoon Tea events to our 2010 calender. And just to make the events that bit more unique, for next year we have decided to theme them.

These popular events held at Lytham Hall in Lytham St Annes start at 2pm and are at a fantastic price of £20.00 per person. For this you get

Champagne Reception in the Old Hall with entertainment from Howard Wing or Nicola Howard (Champagne not included in price)

Afternoon Tea provided by Rowley's Catering consisting of dainty sandwiches & canape style nibbles with unlimited Coffee and selection of Tea's. Followed by miniature desserts such as Victoria sponges, banoffi pies and chocolate fudge brownies, in the beautiful surroundings of the Lytham Hall Gold Room

This is all hosted by the wonderful Jane and Jason Thompson of Flower Design in St Annes with various themed flower demonstrations. All of the amazing creations that are designed by Jane are raffled off at the end of the event with all proceeds going to Trinity Hospice.

Did you know Lytham Hall is the perfect venue for a christening party?

Mathieu and Joanne Ardern got married a The Hall in 2007, therefore it seemed right to return there for their Daughter Myas Christening

After a blessing, guests were greeted at the hall by Rowley's and the Roaring Log Fire

The reception was held in the stunning surroundings of the Old Hall

The buffet was served from the Gillow room

One of Lancashires Premier wedding venues Lytham Hall proved to be a perfect venue for a marriage of two cultures last Saturday.

Team Rowleys worked closly with bride Shelly to integrate traditional Asian and Western Values

Garlands of Flowers and colourful gifts were presented to the guests

The beautiful Autumn leaves added to the vivid colours of the day

And the Mirza family had decorated the hall with an Abundance of Roses and Lillies

Shelly was escorted by close family into the Gold Room for a blessing.

This took place under and arch of lillies

The talented Maryn and Jo Pearson of Fotoamour were on hand to capture every moment

The guests then made their way to The Halls West Wing for a civil ceremoney, after which they were entertained with traditional music.

The Bridal party dined in the lower west wing which Shelly had decorated with flowers and favours

Catering was provided by the excellent Nawab of Levenshulme, Manchester. Guests were treated to a 3 course Hallal Menu of:

Couple's Dream Day Saved From Disaster

In these turbulent times it is unfortunate for any trader who has to close its doors, and The Island Complex on St Annes Promenade is the latest business who has suffered from the Credit Crunch.

However, it was not just the owners who were affected. Alex and his fiancee Rachel had their dream wedding day planned at the complex and due to its closure have now had everything cancelled with a chance of losing their deposit.

The Lindum and Rowley's could not just stand back and watch them suffer especially as Alex was a past employee, Director Paul Rowley explains.....

" Alex used to work for us as a school boy many years ago. I still see him quite often at Tavernors in Lytham where he is the Store Manager. He is a lovely lad and he always say hello and we reminisce about old times. So I was particularly alarmed for him and his fiancee Rachel when I saw their picture on the front page of the Gazette last week, especially once I read that they had lost their deposit when The Island went into liquidation.

Its hard enough in this current financial climate for young couples to afford a wedding so I thought it would be a nice gesture to offer to cater for their wedding either at Lytham Hall, where we are the sole caterers for weddings and events, or here at our hotel, The Lindum which is across the road from the Island complex, and is where Alex worked as a teenager.

So I called Alex and said I was willing to knock the amount of their lost deposit off any menu of his choice. Alex and Rachel were delighted to take us up and we look forward to helping them create a unique occasion.

In fact anyone else who finds themselves in a similar predicament, please don't hesitate to contact me and I'll endeavour to do the same for them"

The Lancashire weather held fine as Mike and Gill Morris held a lavish reception at the Fylde Coasts most Prestigious and Exclusive wedding venue, Lytham Hall
